Instituto Dom Luiz (IDL) is an Associated Laboratory that focuses on the use of quantitative science to unravel our Planet’s Dynamics and to respond to major societal challenges posed by Climate Change, a sustainable use of Earth and Energy Resources, and exposure to Natural Hazards. As a fully integrated Earth System Science Institute – with over 100 integrated members – IDL produces internationally-relevant science that directly contributes to a vast range of public policies and initiatives, or that is upstream to numerous applications at national and European level. IDL manages state-of-the-art laboratories and research in Geophysics, Geochemistry, Geology, Renewable Energy, High Performance Computing facilities and hosts doctoral programs in Earth System Science and Sustainable Energy. IDL research lines combine analytical studies, data analysis, observational activities and modelling.
FCiências.ID is a Non-Profit Private Association, created as a joint initiative of FCUL – a Higher Education institution – and 6 private companies, to support and potentiate Research and Development activities of its associates. FCiências.ID is the legal representative of 19 FCUL research centres (including IDL), covering all the fields of Sciences. FCUL, as the host institution of these centres, provides the overall scientific framework and logistic support to research activities.
The proposed research plan will be developed at the Centre for Applied Photonics (CAP) of INESC TEC. CAP provides highly specialized expertise, advanced equipment and facilities that will greatly contribute to the successful development of the proposal. It performs R&D in optoelectronics mainly focusing on optical fibre technology. CAP also uses its competencies for the assessment of optical technologies into mobile monitorization platforms. INESC TEC will provide all required infrastructures such as access to meeting facilities, communications and access to physical and digital libraries. INESC TEC also provides relevant support services, such as secretariat, accountancy, funding acquisition, HR management, legal support, technology transfer and licensing. INESC TEC is an internationally oriented multi-disciplinary Associate Laboratory, that focusing on the challenges for future needs of society, is dedicated to develop solutions, including Health. The proposed research plan is focus of Health, where human are centred information technologies for improved healthcare and personal well-being, aiming to perform research and technological development, to cope with the societal needs and deliver an innovative solution for chronic diseases detection and control and thus contribute to a healthier life for patients. This project integrates into the overall strategy of INESC TEC thus pursuing value creation and social relevance.
IPMA – Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera
IPMA is a Public Research Institution devoted to Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences and Technology. IPMA mission is to provide technical and scientific advisory to national policy definition, operating and maintaining scientific infrastructures, acquiring data, processing and maintaining the national scientific databases on its areas of competence, and of promoting and coordinating scientific research and technological development in its areas of expertise. The Institute operates the Portuguese meteorological and climate networks, including the meteorological radars, and acts as National Meteorological Service and Service Provider for the Aeronautical Meteorology. IPMA is a member of the WMO, and incorporates the European organizations for meteorology, like EUMETSAT, EUMETNET and ECMWF, the European consortia for Seismology and Marine Geology (EMSC, ORFEUS, EUROGEOSURVEYS), and the International Bodies for Marine Sciences and Fisheries (ICES, NAFO, ICCTI). IPMA operates the National Seismic Network and the Portuguese Tsunami Warning System, simultaneously Tsunami Service Provider for the North-East Atlantic region in the NEAMTWS framework. IPMA carries out offshore seismic reflection, multibeam bathymetry, refraction, magnetics and gravimetry from the coast to the deep ocean. IPMA is responsible for the update of geologic and bathymetry European database EMODNET. IPMA carries our research on Geologic Hazards and Georesources.
IT – Instituto de Telecomunicações
Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT) is a private, non-profit, association of six Portuguese universities, one polytechnic, one public telecom operator and one telecom equipment manufacturer, established in 1992 with a mission to create and share scientific knowledge in telecommunications at world level and to host and tutor graduate students. IT earned the statute of Associated Laboratory in 2001. IT expertise spans all areas of telecommunications including wireless and optical communications, networks and multimedia and enabling sciences and technologies from applied mathematics and quantum information, to electronics including organic electronics to instrumentation and measurements. IT average yearly scientific output includes 15 books, 50 book chapters, 350 journal and 450 conference papers and 10 patents. IT has an accumulated total 4000+ journal papers gathering 43000+ ISI citations. IT is currently involved in 100 national and 30 international R&D projects. About 20% of IT patents ad being exploited. IT developed technology has already been used to create 6 start-ups. IT also plays an important societal role by promoting or participating in science awareness initiatives, by transferring knowledge and technology to national and international industry and by providing consulting services in a non-competing basis.
